CONTINUUSly Transforming Pharma Manufacturing

Discover how CONTINUUS is re-engineering how the world makes medicines

Small-molecule drugs remain the cornerstone of clinicians’ therapeutic toolbox. However, batch-processed active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and drug products incur high labor costs, are time-intensive to manufacture, and can negatively impact the environment.

CONTINUUS, born from the Novartis–MIT Center for Continuous Manufacturing, had a different idea. Our founders led the development of the first fully integrated manufacturing line, which produced both API and coated tablets in a single, seamless process train. Inspired by the results, they licensed the core IP and launched CONTINUUS in 2012 to commercialize the technology for the entire industry.

Strengthening Pharmaceutical Supply Chains & Improving Patient Access

The US and Europe are excessively reliant on highly fragmented and fragile supply chains, which result from significant production in low-cost markets. However, simply reshoring legacy processes would raise costs to unacceptable levels and repeat inefficiencies. Reshoring must be paired with innovation. CONTINUUS Pharmaceutical’s fully Integrated Continuous Manufacturing (ICM) platform shortens production time from months to days, reducing footprint, costs, and emissions. ICM also increases worker safety and improves product quality.

Two ICM Adoption Routes

We offer two paths to continuous manufacturing: retrofitting legacy drug processes to reduce costs and lead times, or starting new drug programs with ICM from the outset. Both approaches enhance quality, reduce manufacturing costs, and facilitate faster, more sustainable production, ultimately building a stronger and more resilient pharmaceutical supply chain.

Integrated Continuous Manufacturing Meets Today’s Challenges

ICM replaces the costly, time-intensive, and risk-prone stop-start choreography of batch processing with a single, automated production stream. The payoff is transformational:

Fail-Safe Quality

Improved Patient Access

Built-In Worker Safety

Lower Cost of Goods (COGS)

Days, Not Months

Smaller Footprint

Greener by Design

Expanded Design Space

Seamless Clinical Scale-Up
