Stephen is the Co-Founder & Head of Scientific Affairs at CONTINUUS Pharmaceuticals, where he leads innovative advancements in Integrated Continuous Manufacturing (ICM). He focuses on developing novel unit operations that enhance efficiency and quality in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and biologics.
A long-time member of CONTINUUS, Stephen has been with the company since its spinout from the MIT–Novartis Center for Continuous Manufacturing. Throughout his tenure, he has held various roles, progressing from Manager to Director of Scientific Affairs. In these positions, he has shaped the company’s technical strategy and achieved significant cost reductions through data-driven Quality by Design practices.
Prior to joining CONTINUUS, Stephen was a postdoctoral scientist at MIT, where he played a key role in building and operating the pioneering Red Line continuous manufacturing pilot plant through the Novartis–MIT Center. He has also worked as a visiting scientist at Novartis and conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley.
Stephen holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from UC San Diego and has completed executive training in Strategy and Innovation at MIT Sloan. Known for his expertise, he is frequently invited to speak at industry forums, where he shares insights on continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing.
